That year, Ethiopians under the leadership of Empress Tayetu and Emperor Minilik defeated the Italian colonizers at the battle of Adwa.

Following Ethiopia’s foot step, many African countries fought for their rights and became independent.

119 years after, Adwa remains close to the hearts of Ethiopians as a reminder that Ethiopia is a country that has never been colonized.

In Toronto, the Ethiopian Association celebrated Adwa victory along with Ethiopian Heritage and Black History Month with a variety of activities including speeches by the president of the Association Dr. Abebe Worku, and Reverend Misale Engida of St. Mary Ethiopian Orthodox Cathedral in Toronto.

Haddis Nigat Arts Forum and Seb Seb Belu Ethiopian cultural Dance group presented poems and cultural dance performances with Dj Birhan (Biggy) on the spin.
