Two Ethiopians running for office in Toronto

Teferi Aseefa and Naser Kaid are two Ethiopian – Canadians vying for Toronto City Council seat and School Board trustee on October 27th. Assefa is a candidate for Ward 25 Scarborough Southwest against City Councilor Michelle Berardinetti, part of a Liberal duo whose husband is the local MPP, and Kaid is running against controversial trustee Elizabeth Moyer.

Assefa is in a tough race against Berardinetti, a right leaning Liberal who supported Mayor Rob Ford early in his term, comes back for re-election with deep pocket and connection in the community. That has not stopped the 66 year old from attempting a formidable challenge for the seat.

Should he win, Assefa wants to attempt to bring United Nations like credential to his constituents. For him, war includes four pillars and includes poverty and inequality. At 62, the father of 8 admirably earned his Master’s degree from the University of Peace.

Kaid, a graduate of Ottawa’s Carleton University, is a father three and wants to bring equity and fair representation to his diverse neighborhoods. He wants to bring new Canadians and immigrants to the decision table and have them become part of the decisions that often affects their livelihood.

He is a well-known advocate and volunteer in the community often starting and volunteering for homework clubs in his ward. Election 2014 concludes on Oct 27th and early voting is ongoing. Please visit www.toronto.ca for more details.
